Our Green Packaging
We care ……..
The Wilderness Picnic Co. cares for the environment and strive to do our part. We make use of eco-friendly, green packaging made from a variety of raw materials including Bagasse, corn starch, wood cellulose and unbleached paper. If you are unsure whether it will biodegrade, we encourage you to recycle.
Bagasse: sugar cane
Bagasse is the waste fibre left over after sugarcane has been pressed for its juice. It is a sustainable and renewable resource as sugar only takes one year to regrow.
- It is a waste material and has the least environmental impact of all our food packaging products.
- Certified GM Free
- Very strong and can hold its shape well.
- Used as a tree-free paper.
- Compostable and used to feed the soil and grow more plants.
Bagasse is used for our takeaway boxes and containers, our range of disposable plates and bowls and our ice cream cups. They are:
- Reasonably priced: Comparative to paper and foil products
- Heat resistant up to 100˚C
- Water resistant
- Oil proof
- Microwave safe
- Freezer friendly
- Breathable – Your food won’t sweat.
Bagasse makes a great alternative to wood pulp for paper. Our eco-friendly toilet paper, serviettes and bowl lids are made from a minimum of 60 % bagasse and 40% wood pulp from a certified sustainable source. They are:
- Recycled raw material – sugarcane waste fibres
- Elemental Chlorine free – Bleached using an elemental chlorine-free (ECF) process
- Locally manufactured
Plant starch: bioplastics
Bioplastic is made from annually renewable plant sources such as hemp oil, soy bean oil and corn starch, whereas conventional petroleum based plastic is made from non-renewable sources.
- As it is mostly made from industrial grade corn, which is sustainable and renewable. It does not compete as a food source as corn regrows within a year.
- It produces significantly less greenhouse gasses and non renewable energy in manufacturing as opposed to conventional plastics.
- They are non-toxic and no harmful toxins will leak into the food
- Plant based plastics are compostable. Best case scenario it ends in a well maintained (or commercial) compost facility where it composts, and is used to feed the soil and grow more plants.
- When exposed to bacteria, moisture and heat, it will biodegrade within 4 to 6 months – just like your other green waste but takes longer to decompose in landfills.

Made from fermented corn starch, PLA is a great alternative to conventional petroleum based plastic in many applications. PLA is transparent and heat sensitive to 40 C. Used on its own, or as a thin sheet over bagasse or cardboard, which acts as a moisture or grease barrier, it is used to make our:
